Robert Bradford creates these life-size and larger-than-life sculptures of humans and animals from discarded plastic items, mainly toys but also other colourful plastic bits and pieces, such as combs and buttons, brushes and parts of clothes pegs. In 2002, he started to consider his children’s forgotten toys as parts of something bigger. Some of the sculptures contain pieces from up to 3,000 toys and are sold for US$19,000.

British-born and -based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster skilfully skirt the boundaries between beauty and the shadowier aspects of humanity, playing with our perceptions as well as our notions of taste. Many of their most notable pieces are made from piles of rubbish, with light projected against them to create a shadow image entirely different to that seen when looking directly at the deliberately disguised pile.

Dirty White Trash (With Gulls), 1998

Image: pashasha

The photo above shows White Trash (With Gulls), one of Webster and Noble’s earliest trash-based pieces. Six months’ worth of household waste plus a pair of dead seagulls comprise the heap of refuse. It’s no accident that it took the couple a further six months to make the piece, during which time they were eating and consuming – as you do. On the wall, the shadow figure self-portraits of the artists take a break with a cigarette and a glass of wine.

Real Life is Rubbish, 2002

Image via: Pantherhouse

Less within the domain of disgust, the trash pile in Real Life Is Rubbish is constructed out of studio instead of everyday waste. Tools that the artists would eventually run out of – like a screwdriver that serves as Noble’s nose – and discarded items such as used up brass polish are piled together. Out of the apparent jumble of chaos, two perfectly formed silhouettes of the artists emerge.

HE/SHE, 2003

Image: pashasha

That the next piece, entitled HE/SHE, looks to display shadows of Noble and Webster urinating is less shocking given that the artists have often chosen to deal with ostensibly cruder themes in their collaborative work. Having met whilst studying at university in Nottingham in the late ’80s, the couple later moved to London, where they gained a reputation for being rebels of the art scene, not content with the position of artist as celebrity.

HE/SHE, daylight view

Image via: Pantherhouse

Notwithstanding their distaste for the conventional, Webster and Noble’s sculptures and installations are not only brilliantly conceived but consummately executed. The second image above of HE/SHE shows more clearly the junk sculpture from which the image of Noble emerges in the light of the projector.

Metal Fucking Rats With Heart Shaped Tail, 2007

Image via: Simplistic Art

Not all of Noble and Webster’s work uses low grade materials drawn from the rubbish dump or the scrap yard – like this welded scrap metal piece of rat love. No, some of it borrows from the aesthetics of the shopping mall or the Las Vegas light show, with flashing displays and gaudy neon inspired by some of the most crass that culture has to offer. As far as the artists are concerned, it’s all worth recycling.

Dark Stuff, 2008

Image: Jose Luis RDS

Yet the idea of reusing materials to create art gets one of its most visceral treatments in this last piece. Casting the by now familiar shadows of the artists’ profiled heads – severed and impaled on spikes in this case – the sculptures are composed of various mummified animals. A nod, perhaps, to aspects of popular culture like vulgar living history, it’s another work by this irreverent pair that might mean you now look at all kinds of trash and waste in a rather different light.

Check out this brilliant World Wildlife Fund ad campaign in the form of bathroom towel dispenser! Demonstrating that Saatchi and Saatchi is the undisputed king of transforming advertising into an art form, this genius PSA integrates a crucial environmental message into the built environment. Shown above is the latest example of clever marketing concept ingeniously integrated into the most banal space: a public restroom. These paper towel dispensers have a cut out the shape of South America through which a stack of green paper towels illustrates the green rain forest canopy of the continent. As the paper towel dispenser is slowly emptied of its green paper towels, we see the greenness slowly drained out of South America, symbolizing the nasty environmental impact of disposable paper towels.
This eco-ad utilizes the movement of shadows on a billboard to demonstrate how global warming will lead to rising water levels with a shaped canopy and the shifting sun.

Prolam Y&R , Santiago produced this large-scale billboard showing refugees fleeing from a flood in Asia, with dozens of air conditioners peeping out from a refurbished building. It was produced to raise conscience regarding global warming. The line ” El aire que enfría tu hogar, calienta el mundo” (THE AIR THAT COOLS YOUR HOME HEATS UP THE WORLD), was used to help convey that climate change is also due to excess of carbon dioxide in the air.

“Look how much carbon monoxide you’ll keep out of the air we breathe by not driving for just one day.” That’s the message that was displayed on the giant black cloud attached to a car’s tailpipe after being inflated with a day’s worth of exhaust. This guerrilla ad by WWF appeared in China in 2007.
WWF France presents a visual reminder of the importance of trees to the atmosphere in “Lungs”, a print advertisement developed by TBWA\Paris. The tag line: “Before it’s too late”.

This controversial ad had the slogan “the tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11.
The planet is brutally powerful. Respect it. Preserve it”.

According to some sources, the WWF did not commission this ad. It was a South American firm called DDB that was attempting to land an account with the animal non-profit NGO. According to the National Enquirer, after the ad was outed by the site AdFreak.com, WWF immediately issued a quick denial of purpose. Calling the ad “offensive and tasteless”, the World Wildlife Fund claimed it didn’t authorize the ad. “SUMMARILY REJECTED” was what WWF told the creative team behind the print terror concept.

While DDB Brazil apologizes for the ad’s creation, they still claim it was approved for publication by the local branch of the WWF.

Diesel, the Italian clothing manufacturer, has been raising the heat with a provocative advertising campaign, “Global Warming Ready”, launched at the end of January. A series of newspaper, magazine and billboard advertisements shows models posing in Diesel clothing in a world affected by raised water levels and temperatures. A desert surrounding the great wall, tropical gardens in Paris, London and New York submerged under water, and macaws in Venice, how much worse could it get? While it is hard to take the Diesel campaign entirely seriously, it still packs quite a punch.

For over 70 years now SAFE has been the voice for all animals, helping expose animal cruelty and abuse as well as fighting against animal testing across the world. The organization mainly uses public awareness campaigns (and advertisements) and political lobbying to expose and question the needless use of animals in cruel experiments and commercial exploitation. The ads above specifically target the latter, provoking questions about the use of animals as scarves, boots and other leather goods, and so on.
Use electricity wisely, another clever environment ad. This one is from the national power company Eskom in South Africa.

The Greenfamily Youth Association of Environment Protection and their advertising agency came up with this idea of pollution awareness. The scheme was to erect a board on a drainage hole, meaning dirty water is like egesta. They wanted to arouse people’s caution about environment protection through strong visual impact of psychological or even physical aversion.
Denver Water Authority’s excellent marketing has no plans of slowing down. The company’s new campaign, from Denver’s Sukle Advertising & Design, frames TV and outdoor placements around the tag line, “Grass is dumb. Water 2 minutes less. Your lawn won’t notice”.

Every day, we are bombarded by thousands of ads, most of which are boring, thoroughly irritating or both. Every now and again, however, an ad comes along that is so powerful, due to the originality of its content or the way that it conveys its message, that it inspires us to change our behaviour: it might make us find out some more information about a product, donate money to charity or even cut down on drinking alcohol!

With in excess of $385 billion spent annually on ads, it’s unsurprising that admen give life to veritable masterpieces of visual communication from time to time. These truly brilliant ads can be found on TV, on the internet and on billboards too. But the most engaging ads of all appear in traditional print media, as people reading newspapers and magazines have time to absorb a sea of information as well as creative subtleties.

Below, you’ll find 30 examples representing the crème de la crème of recent print advertisements.

Major Brands

Since the dawn of mass production, in the early 19th century, major brands have used advertising to promote their goods and services. The amount of money spent on advertising worldwide grows considerably year on year. By 2010, it’s predicted that investment in advertising will top $450 billion annually.

Charity Campaigns

There was a time when charities relied solely on shock tactics to raise money. Most charity ads seemed to feature a starving child or otherwise ailing individual. These ads worked for a time, but people started to find them so upsetting that they simply switched off to the ad altogether. Things have changed. Charities now recognise that, like major brands, they can inspire their audience most successfully by taking an original and creative approach.

TV Channels

For obvious reasons, TV channels tend to advertise on TV, but when they do opt for print media ads instead, the results can be rather stunning. The BBC have run many inspirational televised advertising campaigns in the past, but none of them have connected with viewers in such a subtle way as the World News ads below. These ads were designed for commuters, who have plenty of time, en route to and from work, to absorb the hidden images.

23. Dirty Jobs [Discovery Channel]

Pharmaceuticals

In the immortal words of Peter Parker: “With great power comes great responsibility”. Pharmaceutical companies often walk a fine line when it comes to the morality of their ads and must ensure that they don’t prey on the “weak” or the desperate.
The painting of murals is often thought to be a modern, urban phenomenon, but, in fact, it’s nothing of the sort. People have been painting murals for millennia and some ancient murals, preserved in tombs in Egypt and under piles of ash in Pompeii, are still visible today.

In 2009, people feel compelled to paint murals for much the same reasons as they did thousands of years ago: to make a political statement, promote a particular ideology, commemorate a historical figure or loved one, or simply get their artwork seen by hundreds, if not thousands, on a daily basis.

Below, you’ll find images of some of the most incredible murals the world has to offer. Most are hand painted, with ordinary or spray paint, while some have been printed onto plastic or paper and “stuck” onto the wall. While the painting of murals is often contentious (one man’s masterpiece is another’s act of vandalism), we’re sure people wouldn’t object to having most of these fantastic works of art on display in their towns and cities.
